Gingival contouring, also known as gum contouring, is a treatment which can improve the overall look of a patient’s teeth and gums. Dentists primarily use it in cases where a patient has a “gummy” smile — when the gums cover the base of the teeth, making them appear shorter.

The gingival contouring procedure starts with a local anaesthetic so that the gum area is completely numb. The dentist then uses a scalpel or laser to trim away excess gum tissue before reshaping the remaining tissue. Sometimes, your dentist may need to remove some of the underlying bone as well.

This procedure is simple, and the healing process is usually quick. Your dentist will discuss post-operative care with you to ensure your speedy recovery. After the treatment, you may want to consider veneers or crowns to improve your smile.
